Rivers LG polls Residents shun no movement order

Despite a state-wide 12-hour no-movement order aimed at ensuring hitch-free local government elections, some traders in Obio/Akpor, Rivers State, opened their shops on Saturday, citing the need to survive in tough economic times.

The Rivers Government had announced the restriction across all 23 Local Government Areas to allow smooth voting for chairmanship and councillorship seats. However, several roadside stalls and small shops were seen operating as customers came by even while polling was underway.

Mr. Chinedu Okoro, who runs a provisions store at Woji Ward 6, said he was fully aware of the directive but could not afford to comply.

“I have three children and a sick mother to take care of. If I don’t sell today, we won’t eat.

The government should understand that not everyone can afford to stay indoors without income,” he said.

Mrs. Comfort Brown, a food vendor, explained that she had stocked up on perishable items the previous day and risked heavy losses if she stayed home.

“I bought vegetables and meat yesterday before I was told of the restriction. If I don’t cook and sell, everything will spoil.

I cannot afford that kind of loss,” Brown said.

Another resident, Miss Blessing, who sells fruits, said the lack of power supply at home and the need to make ends meet pushed her to open for business.

“I am not here to cause trouble, but just to help and earn something small,” she said, adding that people were still moving around for various reasons despite the official order.
