Lamlaoui s wonder strike fires Morocco to historic third CHAN crown

Morocco etched their name deeper into African football history on Saturday, defeating Madagascar 3-2 to claim an unprecedented third African Nations Championship (CHAN) title at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Already winners in 2018 and 2020, the Atlas Lions relied on their experience and the brilliance of star forward Oussama Lamlaoui, whose two goals sealed the championship and earned him the tournament’s top-scorer accolade with six strikes.

Lamlaoui’s second effort will be remembered as the standout moment of CHAN 2025.“With Madagascar pushing higher in search of an equaliser, Lamlaoui spotted goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa off his line and unleashed a stunning 40-yard strike that sailed into the net,” a post-match report on the CAF Online website revealed this.

The breathtaking goal ensured Morocco pocketed the $3.5 million prize, while first-time finalists Madagascar took home silver medals and $1.2 million for their valiant run.

The contest opened at full throttle. Lamlaoui put Morocco ahead inside 15 minutes, finishing off a precise pass from Youssef Mehri.

Madagascar, whose underdog story captivated fans across the continent, levelled through Toky Rakotondraibe after pouncing on a defensive lapse. But parity didn’t last long — Sabir Bougrine restored Morocco’s advantage just before halftime, again assisted by the lively Mehri.

Lamlaoui’s long-range stunner gave Morocco breathing space in the second half, yet Madagascar fought to the last whistle. Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa reduced the deficit with 12 minutes to go, setting up a frantic finale as the islanders launched wave after wave of attacks. Morocco’s defence held firm to close out a tense victory — their third CHAN triumph in six year.

While Morocco cemented their place as CHAN’s most decorated side, Madagascar also made history. It read, “In just their second CHAN appearance, they became the first island nation and the 13th country overall to reach a CAF senior final.”

Their fearless counterattacking style, highlighted by a dramatic semi-final win over Sudan, earned widespread admiration and signaled a bright future for Malagasy football.

This year’s CHAN, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, was the first staged across three nations. From packed stadiums to electric atmospheres, the PAMOJA 2024 edition showcased African football at its finest.

As fireworks lit up Nairobi, Morocco stood tallest once again — resilient, organised, and inspired by Lamlaoui’s magic. For Madagascar, their silver medal proved one thing: in African football, fairytales are still being written.
