Former Edo University’s VC dies days after handover

Prof. Dawood Egbefo, who recently concluded his tenure as Acting Vice Chancellor of Edo State University, Iyahmo, has passed away just about 14 days after leaving office.
According to a post on the university’s official Facebook page by its spokesperson, Amaechi Kelly Quincy, Prof. Egbefo died on August 27, 2025.
Quincy did not disclose the cause of death but described him as “a distinguished scholar, a mentor and astute administrator.”
Earlier this month, on August 8, 2025, Governor Monday Okpebholo announced the appointment of Prof. Victor Adetimirin Olawale as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Prof. Egbefo earned his PhD in History and International Studies at the University of Ilorin, where he had also completed his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in History. His academic career began at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, before he joined Edo University Iyahmo in 2017 as an Associate Professor.
