NAFDAC alerts Nigerians as counterfeit cowbell milk floods market

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert about fake Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets currently being circulated across Nigeria.

In a notice posted on its website, the agency revealed that Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, makers of the original Cowbell milk, reported that counterfeit products are now mimicking the brand.

“This includes unauthorised use of the brand name, packaging design, NAFDAC registration number, and trademark.

“The MAH has confirmed that these products are neither manufactured or distributed by them as the counterfeit packaging design was last used for production by the company in September 2023,” NAFDAC stated.

According to the agency, the authentic product is creamy, comes in packaging with the updated “Our Creamy Goodness” artwork, carries batch details printed by laser, and features automated sealing on the sides. In contrast, the counterfeit version looks less like milk, uses an outdated “Our Milk” design, has batch details printed with ink instead of laser, misplaced coding, and manually sealed edges.

NAFDAC warned that “The use or consumption of counterfeit Cowbell ‘Our Milk’ Milk presents serious health and safety risks. Such products may contain harmful substances, including toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients that do not meet food safety standards.

“Consumption of counterfeit milk can result in foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, or even death in severe cases. Infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are particularly vulnerable.”

The agency has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to track down and remove the fake milk sachets from circulation. It also urged distributors, retailers, and consumers to stay vigilant and verify products before sale or consumption.

“All food products must be obtained from authorised/licensed manufacturers/suppliers. The products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked,” the alert noted.

NAFDAC further encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any suspected counterfeit products through its hotlines (0800-162-3322), email ([email protected]), or via its e-reporting platforms at www.nafdac.gov.ng.

“Similarly, healthcare professionals and patients are also encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of counterfeited food products to the nearest NAFDAC office, or through the use of the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website www.nafdac.gov.ng or via e-mail on [email protected],” the statement added.
