Osun LGs blockade Gov Adeleke reveals next line of action

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has reaffirmed his commitment to restoring operations at the state’s local government councils, which have been inactive since February 17 due to an ongoing leadership dispute.

Speaking in Osogbo on Thursday at a reception organised in his honour by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its state secretariat, Adeleke vowed to “get our local government back and running,” despite fierce resistance.

The standoff stems from conflicting claims by the two major parties. The All Progressives Congress (APC) maintains that a February 10, 2025 ruling by the Akure Court of Appeal reinstated council officials elected on October 15, 2022, who were earlier removed by a Federal High Court judgment in November 2022. The PDP counters that officials elected during the February 22, 2025 polls are the legitimate authorities to oversee council administration.

Addressing cheering party supporters, Adeleke likened his political opponents to the Biblical Pharaoh, accusing them of attempting to stifle progress in Osun.

He declared, “We will get our local government back and running. They want to hold Osun down. They are shocked with our delivery and transformation of Osun; they want to keep Osun from developing.

“Will you allow them, great members of PDP and good people of Osun State? Should we go to the past again? Should we return to bad governance again?

“We must sustain good governance. We must sustain the tempo. The good work must continue. Osun people are with us. God is with us. We shall overcome the Pharaohs facing us. We will get our local government back and running. They want to hold Osun down. They are shocked with our delivery and transformation of Osun; they want to keep Osun from developing. Will you allow them?”

The governor also urged party members to intensify mobilisation, participate actively in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), and encourage others to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

In separate remarks, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Wale Egbedun, and Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi, echoed support for Adeleke’s administration. They called on PDP members to remain steadfast and fully involved in the CVR exercise to secure the party’s future success.
