Police Inspector, 3 others arrested for robbery, extortion

The Edo State Police Command has apprehended a serving police inspector and three civilian accomplicesfor allegedly terrorising residents of Benin through acts of brutality, extortion, and armed robbery.
Police spokesperson Moses Yamu, in a statement issued on Sunday, said the arrests were made after a viral video surfaced showing a victim alleging that some officers abducted him, seized his phone and belongings, and harassed him.
Acting on the report, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika ordered a swift investigation that led to the interception of the suspects.
“On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items,” Yamu stated.
He confirmed that the arrested police inspector and three civilians were linked to extortion and harassment of city residents.
Describing the conduct as “shameful and criminal,” Agbonika vowed that the culprits would face the full weight of the law.
“The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct within the Force. There will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the police. Any officer caught engaging in extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted,” he said.
Yamu called on the public — including the victim in the viral video — to provide credible information that could aid the investigation and ensure justice is done.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, restoring public trust, and maintaining the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
