Bye-election: Suspected vote buyer arrested with N25.9m

Security operatives in Kaduna have apprehended a man allegedly attempting to buy votes ahead of today’s bye-elections, recovering nearly ₦26 million in cash during the operation.
The Kaduna State Police Command, working jointly with the Department of State Services (DSS) and other agencies, arrested Shehu Aliyu Patangi at about 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. He was picked up at a popular hotel along Turunku Road in Kaduna metropolis, where investigators say he had been preparing to distribute the cash to sway voters.
Police disclosed that preliminary findings confirmed the money — amounting to ₦25,963,000 — was intended to influence the outcome of the polls. During questioning, Patangi reportedly admitted to the plan and asked for leniency.
Commissioner of Police Rabiu Muhammad praised the collaboration between security agencies, describing the arrest as “a significant step in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.”
He cautioned that no individual, regardless of status, would be spared if found undermining the elections.“The Command remains resolute in its duty to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair election,” Muhammad stated, urging Kaduna residents to vote without fear or intimidation.
The police command also assured voters of adequate security before, during, and after the exercise.
