Grief has struck Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, following the tragic death of Ajibola Ibitayo, a student in the Department of Dentistry, who reportedly took his own life after struggling with poor academic performance.

The incident was confirmed by Adebayo Idris, President of the Dentistry Students’ Association, in a statement on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. Idris revealed that the tragedy occurred shortly after the release of examination results on August 12.

The university community has been left shocked and saddened by the loss, with calls for increased mental health support and counselling services for students facing academic pressures.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry,” the statement read in part.

“We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of his examination result.

“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face. As an association, we are devastated, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.”

It urged students to support one another and seek professional help when necessary.

“Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles,” the association stressed.
