Focus on corruption not opposition politicians ADC tells EFCC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is carrying out selective investigations designed to intimidate political opponents of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party warned that the trend threatens Nigeria’s democracy and erodes public trust in the nation’s foremost anti-graft agency

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Monday, the ADC alleged that the EFCC’s recent activities, including reopening closed cases and reviving decade-old allegations, disproportionately target members of opposition parties while allies of the ruling party enjoy protection from scrutiny.

“These are not fresh cases arising from new evidence but new files opened in reaction to emergent political affiliations to intimidate key opposition figures,” Abdullahi said.

The party said the EFCC, which was established to apply the law impartially, now “operates like a department of the APC,” weaponised to silence critics and achieve through intimidation what the government cannot achieve through public debate.

According to the ADC, investigations involving high-profile APC members have “quietly faded away” after they defected to the ruling party, while opposition figures face public trials over old allegations “dressed up as fresh evidence.”

“Selective prosecution is the death of justice,” the ADC declared, adding, “It does appear that in today’s Nigeria, one’s guilt or innocence depends on one’s party membership, not evidence.”

The ADC urged Nigerians, civil society organisations, and the independent media to resist what it described as “a dangerous slide into dictatorship” and the misuse of public institutions for partisan ends, insisting that the EFCC belongs to the people and is funded by taxpayers, not the APC.
