2 boxers die after suffering brain injuries

Two boxers have died within a day of each other after sustaining severe brain injuries during separate bouts on the same fight card in Tokyo, according to boxing bodies and local media.

Shigetoshi Kotari died on Friday, followed by Hiromasa Urakawa on Saturday, a week after both were hurt in matches held at Korakuen Hall on August 2. The 28-year-olds each underwent surgery for subdural haematoma — bleeding inside the skull — reports said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Japanese boxing community during this incredibly difficult time,” the World Boxing Organization said on Saturday in its statement about Urakawa, who was knocked out by Yoji Saito.

Kotari’s death came from injuries sustained in his 12-round draw against Yamato Hata, the World Boxing Council confirmed on Friday. “The WBC and its President, Mauricio Sulaiman, deeply mourn this irreparable loss and wish his family and friends strength during this difficult time,” the organisation said.

Earlier this year, 28-year-old Irish super-featherweight John Cooney also died from a brain injury suffered in February during the defence of his Celtic title.
