NCAA suspends 2 ValueJet pilots over safety breach at Abuja Airport

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended two pilots of ValueJet, a domestic airline, following a serious violation of aviation safety regulations at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the disciplinary action was taken after the flight crew initiated departure procedures without obtaining the mandatory pre-departure clearance from air traffic control.

“This reckless action endangered the safety of ground personnel and other airport users, contravening established civil aviation regulations and international safety standards,” Achimugu said.

The aviation authority described the action as a grave safety violation, and as a result, suspended the licenses of the pilot, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba, with immediate effect.

“The suspension will remain in effect pending the conclusion of a full investigation into the incident,” the NCAA noted.

The regulatory body reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on violations of flight safety procedures and reassured the flying public and aviation stakeholders of its continued vigilance in maintaining air travel safety in Nigeria.

“The Authority hereby reaffirms to all stakeholders its commitment to safety and strict adherence to aviation protocols,” Achimugu added.
