JUST IN : Nigerian nurses, midwives suspend strike

The industrial action by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has been suspended, according to the Minister of Health, Ali Pate.

Speaking to reporters after a closed-door meeting on Friday, Pate explained that the resolution came after negotiations with the leadership of the association.

The union’s leaders, however, did not address the media following the meeting.

Members of the association had embarked on a warning strike beginning July 29, 2025, citing the government’s lack of response to a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14. The strike, which affected federal health institutions nationwide, was scheduled to run until August 5.

The industrial action was triggered by concerns over poor welfare and working conditions for nurses. The association has been pressing for improved welfare packages, equitable allowances, and better work environments.

NANNM National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, had earlier accused the Federal Government of failing to engage the association during the negotiation window.

“As far as we are concerned, there has been no communication from the government to this moment. That is why we are saying the strike is going on, and nothing is stopping it.

“Even if the government calls today or tomorrow, it won’t stop the strike. They had enough time,” Rilwan had stated.

The association’s demands include an upward review of shift allowance, adjustment of uniform allowance, the adoption of a distinct salary structure for nurses, increased core duty allowance, large-scale recruitment of nurses, and the creation of a dedicated nursing department within the Federal Ministry of Health.

Rilwan emphasized that the decision to proceed with the strike was not taken solely by the leadership but reflected the frustrations of members over prolonged neglect of their concerns.
