Why Tinubu’s gift to Super Falcons sparked mixed reactions – Presidency

President Bola Tinubu has honoured the Super Falcons with a generous package following their recent triumph at the 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Rabat, Morocco.
Each of the 24 players on the victorious squad was rewarded with $100,000, a three-bedroom apartment, and a national honour in recognition of their outstanding performance.
The announcement, made on Monday, has sparked mixed reactions across the country. While many Nigerians have praised the President’s gesture as a commendable show of support for women in sports, others have raised concerns over the timing and scale of the reward amidst Nigeria’s current economic challenges.
However, in his reaction, Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy said many Nigerians are comparing Tinubu’s gift to the Super Falcons and the Big Brother Nigeria reality show.
He said that some Nigerians are unappreciative of the president’s gesture towards the champions of the 2024 WAFCON tournament.
According to Onanuga, while BBNaija offer N150 million as a grand prize to its winner, the president has honoured and rewarded hard work among others.
Onanuga wrote on X, “When you remember that Multichoice, the organiser of the BBNaija reality show is offering the winner ₦150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons.
“President Tinubu has rewarded excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry and the undying Nigerian spirit,” he stated.
