Former Borno State governor and ex-national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff, has expressed confidence that Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), will return to the PDP ahead of the next general elections in 2027.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Monday, Sheriff said Obi’s political journey is likely to circle back to the PDP—the party he left in May 2022 to pursue his presidential ambition under the Labour Party platform.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, gained massive popularity during the 2023 elections, emerging as a formidable third force and galvanizing millions of young Nigerians under the LP banner.

Obi left the PDP days before its presidential primary, stating that “recent developments in the party do not support constructive contributions”.

The former governor was to participate in the PDP presidential primary election scheduled for May 28, 2022, before he left the party.

On May 27, 2022, Obi joined the LP, where he became the standard-bearer and contested the 2023 presidential election.

‘OBI WILL RUN AS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE UNDER PDP’

Sheriff claimed that the former Anambra governor would pursue his presidential ambition through the PDP in 2027.

He added that Obi is only biding time before returning to his former party.

“As far as this politics is concerned, ADC doesn’t exist. Give the party three months and it will die down,” Sheriff said.

“The information available to me is that at any moment from now Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP.”

On July 25, Jerry Gana, a founding member of the PDP, said steps were being taken to bring Obi back into the party.

Obi came third in the 2023 presidential election under the LP.
