Niger LG chairman suspended for challenging tenure reduction in court

The Executive Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area in Niger State, Hon. Aminu Yakubu Ladan, has been suspended from office following his legal challenge against the state government’s decision to shorten the tenure of elected local government officials.
Ladan had filed a lawsuit contesting the move by the Niger State Government to reduce the constitutionally backed four-year term of elected council officials to three years. According to him, the decision undermines the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022.
Sources indicate that his suspension was announced on Monday, with officials citing “gross misconduct and insubordination” related to his legal action against the state government.
