WAFCON: Tinubu reacts to Super Falcons victory, lavishes praise on Okoronkwo

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Falcons following their historic win at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final in Morocco, describing the performance as a moment of national pride.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President singled out forward Esther Okoronkwo for her calm under pressure and pivotal role in the dramatic final.
“President Bola Tinubu has expressed his delight at the Super Falcons’ spectacular victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), stating that he eagerly looks forward to receiving the trophy in Abuja,” the statement read.
Speaking during a post-match video call with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, players, and officials, Tinubu congratulated the squad for clinching a record 10th continental title and praised their fighting spirit.
“I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation and we are all very happy.
“You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and management of the team, including the ministers and the officials,” he said.
He also commended Ajibade, who was named both the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament.
Esther Okoronkwo received special mention from the President for her composure during a defining moment in the match. Her well-taken 64th-minute penalty helped turn the tide in Nigeria’s favour.
Tinubu called the moment “very courageous,” highlighting Okoronkwo’s influence in creating the second goal and delivering the decisive free-kick that led to Jennifer Echegini’s match-winner in the 3-2 comeback victory.
“Safe journey home, enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, God bless you,” the President added, as the excited players responded with chants of “Thank you, Mr President!”
Ajibade, speaking on behalf of the team, expressed gratitude for the President’s support and the approval of full payment of allowances, pledging that the players were eager to present the trophy to him in Abuja.
The call ended on a patriotic note, with the team singing the national anthem and shouting three resounding “Gbosa!” cheers in honour of the President.
