Tragedy as bandits kill 38 kidnap victims despite N50m ransom payment

Tragedy has struck Banga Village in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where armed bandits have killed 38 kidnapped residents even after receiving a ransom exceeding N50 million.

The harrowing development was confirmed by a local resident, Aminu Musa Banga, who said the attackers had abducted no fewer than 56 villagers over recent months, demanding N1 million per person for their release.

“These bandits killed 38 of our men and one woman while they were in their custody. We received this report from 16 of our people who were released by these bandits,” Banga told LEADERSHIP.

According to him, the killings occurred after the ransom had already been paid.“The bandits slaughtered them one by one after we paid a ransom of over N50 million,” he added.

Banga also disclosed that the gunmen have now seized effective control of Banga Village, causing nearby residents to flee in fear.

He called on both the federal and state governments to dispatch military forces to restore order and repel the attackers.

Local government officials also confirmed the grim situation. Chairman of Kaura Namoda LGA, Hon. Mannir Haidara, said that  reportedly survivors released by the captors were severely injured and receiving treatment.

“The remaining victims were released with serious injuries caused by beatings while in captivity,” he said.

Haidara assured the public that authorities are working with security agencies and the state government to respond to the crisis.“God willing, we will not be tired of continuing to take appropriate measures and working hand in hand with security agencies and the State Government under the leadership of Dr. Dauda Lawal, which is firmly committed to overcoming this problem of insecurity that plagues us day and night,” he stated.

The Zamfara State Police Command has yet to officially respond. However,  police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar reportedly claimed that, “No case of this nature was reported from the area.”

He reportedly urged the public to promptly report such incidents to ensure timely intervention.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives member for Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency, Aminu Sani Jaji, also acknowledged the killings in a social media post.

“I’m deeply saddened by the recent attack on the people of Banga by bandits last night. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. My heart goes out to those affected, and I stand in solidarity with you during this difficult time,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The lawmaker also issued an apology for perceived failures in protecting his constituents:“As your representative, I apologize for any perceived shortcomings in ensuring the safety and security of our community. I’m committed to working tirelessly with relevant authorities to address this issue, enhance security measures, and prevent future occurrences. I’ll also advocate for support and resources from both state and Federal Governments to help our community recover and rebuild.”
