A former Edo State Commissioner for Digital Economy, Mr. Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor, has issued a public apology to Peter Obi and Nigerians over controversial remarks made by Governor Monday Okpebholo, which have drawn widespread criticism.

According to reports, Governor Okpebholo made a statement during a political event in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, suggesting that the safety of the former presidential candidate could not be guaranteed in Edo State.

The governor’s comments came while welcoming Marcus Onobun, former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and a PDP lawmaker representing Esan West/Igueben/Central into the All Progressives Congress (APC) following his defection.

In response, Ifaluyi-Isibor issued a statement from Benin on Saturday, describing the governor’s remarks as “reckless and embarrassing,” insisting they do not reflect the character of Edo people.

According to the former commissioner, Edo citizens are known for their hospitality, tolerance, and civility, even in the face of political disagreements.

“The recent comments by Governor Okpebholo warning Mr Obi against visiting Edo were widely viewed as reckless, embarrassing, and unbefitting of a public servant.

“Let it be said clearly that is not who we are. We do not threaten guests, allies, or adversaries in Edo state.”

“The Governor is not a true reflection of Edo people. His outburst does not define us.

“Following the video’s circulation, I received numerous calls. My first reply: Governor Obaseki is no longer in office; this is a new Sheriff entirely,” he said.

Ifaluyi-Isibor emphasized that Peter Obi—and indeed all Nigerians—have the constitutional right to travel freely across the country without intimidation or needing prior approval.

“Edo people genuinely admire Peter Obi. If he joined a birthday party on election day, that party would likely win in the governor’s polling unit.

“Let’s overlook his lapse in judgment and forgive.

“Our culture and ancestors have always welcomed everyone. We remain a proud people rooted in tolerance, unity, and peace across all political affiliations.”

He acknowledged rising government sensitivity to criticism and offered a conciliatory note: “While the state government increasingly resents criticism, I apologise in advance to anyone offended, please.”
