Ex-Speaker quits PDP for APC weeks after demolition threat by Edo govt

Less than six weeks after the Edo State Government marked his residence for demolition over alleged cult-related activity, former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Marcus Onobun, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Onobun, who represents Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, formally announced his defection in a letter dated July 18 and addressed to PDP in Esan West Local Government Area.
He cited deepening divisions within the PDP as the reason for his exit.
“It has become evident that the internal crises, leadership instability, and deep-seated divisions that continue to plague the party at all levels are no longer reconcilable,” he wrote.
“These unfortunate realities have hindered the PDP’s ability to fulfil its founding vision and effectively serve the Nigerian people.”
Onobun said his decision came after “extensive reflection and consultation” with political stakeholders and members of his constituency.
“However, in the interest of my people and the mandate I hold, I must take a principled stand that allows me to pursue a more effective pathway toward development, unity, and good governance,” he said.
He thanked the PDP for the platform it had offered him over the years.
“I also express my gratitude to all leaders and colleagues I have had the privilege of working with,” he added.
Copies of his resignation letter were sent to PDP leaders at the local government, state, and national levels.
Onobun’s departure adds to a growing list of high-profile defections in Edo politics. Just days earlier, Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, Director-General of the Asue Ighodalo Campaign Organisation for the 2024 governorship race, also resigned from the PDP.
Back in June, Onobun had denied any connection to cult-related activities after his house was earmarked for demolition, insisting the allegations were baseless.
