Shettima Arrives In London

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London on Monday morning, following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the wake of the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Shettima was accompanied by Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff. Upon arrival, the Nigerian delegation was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication.

President Tinubu had earlier confirmed the death of his predecessor, who passed away in London on Sunday at about 4:30 pm.

He directed Shettima and Gbajabiamila to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria. Buhari, who was 82, served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985. Tinubu has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the departed leader.

Burhari’s remains will be laid to rest in Daura on Monday, according to Islamic rites.
