Court recommends prosecution of nurse involved in Mohbad s treatment

A Lagos State Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu has directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to initiate legal proceedings against Feyi Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who reportedly gave an injection to late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, before his death.

Magistrate C.A. Shotobi, in a ruling delivered on Thursday, stated that Ogedengbe had no official license or certification as a nurse or medical practitioner.

The court held that her decision to administer a tetanus shot was unlawful and contributed to the complications that allegedly led to the artist’s death.

The magistrate criticized systemic failures within the healthcare sector that enable unqualified individuals to operate as medical professionals.

In addition to recommending Ogedengbe’s prosecution, the court ordered authorities to investigate why the Nigeria Police did not respond to a petition Mohbad had filed prior to his death. The petition, which accused music personalities Naira Marley and Sam Larry of assault and intimidation, became a focal point during the coroner’s inquest.

According to Shotobi, “Pursuant to section 29 of the coroner laws of Lagos State, this court recommends the prosecution of the unlicensed medical personnel, Felicia Ogedengbe, by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, for unlawful medical practice and gross negligence.” The court emphasized that the allegations made in the petition merited a thorough investigation, especially in light of testimonies heard during the inquiry.

The court also noted missteps by the late singer’s family. It faulted Mohbad’s father for burying him without a proper autopsy and his wife for managing his medical condition at home instead of taking him to a healthcare facility.

Mohbad, a 27-year-old rising Afrobeats musician, died on September 12, 2023, under controversial circumstances. His passing sparked public outcry and led to the formation of a special investigative panel. He had gained widespread acclaim for his energetic performances and lyrical talent, earning a dedicated fan base both in Nigeria and abroad.
