Shock and grief have gripped a community in Benue State following a violent altercation that led to the death of a schoolteacher allegedly at the hands of a 16-year-old student.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday in Oju Local Government Area, involved a Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3) student who reportedly attacked his teacher during a dispute.

The suspect , identified as Friday Ogamde, is a student at UBE Oju Centre, located in the Oju area of Benue State.

According to report by security analyst, Zagozola Makama, Ogamde confronted 35-year-old Mr. Oyibe Oyibe over a school cap that had been confiscated in May 2025.

Witnesses say the confrontation escalated quickly, turning physical. The student allegedly struck the teacher, causing him to collapse on the spot.

Mr. Oyibe was rushed to Amara Hospital in Oju, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel. His body has since been transferred to the General Hospital in Oju for an autopsy.

Authorities have confirmed the arrest of the suspect. The Benue State Police Command condemned the act, assuring the public that a thorough investigation is underway and justice will be served.
