LP crisis deepens as party moves to expel Peter Obi

The crisis within the Labour Party (LP) has deepened as the Abure-led faction, through its National Publicity Secretary Abayomi Arabambi, has announced plans to formally recommend the expulsion of Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

Speaking on Tuesday during Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Arabambi revealed that the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) would soon convene to deliberate on Obi’s alleged anti-party activities, which he claimed violated the party’s constitution.

According to Arabambi, Obi had previously been suspended, but went on to engage in actions deemed contrary to the interests and unity of the Labour Party. He did not provide specific details of the alleged infractions but insisted that the matter would be formally addressed.

He added that once the NEC makes the recommendation, the final decision on Obi’s expulsion would be taken at the party’s national convention, in accordance with LP’s constitution and standard political procedures.

”Let me make it very clear: we are convening a NEC [National Executive Council] meeting where he (Obi) will be expelled. It is unconstitutional for you to belong to two political parties at a time. They have deceived him to their side, and there he shall remain.

Obi will be expelled from our party. He is no longer a member. It is not within his right to claim, ‘I am still a member of the Labour Party,’ and at the same time be hobnobbing with what we call the ‘yahoo yahoo’ coalition. We are not going to accept that.” he said.
