In a significant show of support for its youth, the Akwa Ibom State Government has extended its ₦20,000 monthly allowance previously reserved for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving within the state—to include all corps members of Akwa Ibom origin serving across Nigeria.

The move, aimed at cushioning rising living costs and promoting the welfare of corps members, was announced on Tuesday by the State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Aniekan Umanah.

According to the commissioner, the decision reflects the government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens, especially young graduates undergoing national service. He noted that the allowance will help ease the financial burden faced by many during their NYSC year.

He said the grant is subject to periodic review based on prevailing circumstances.

Recall that Governor Umo Eno had last week approved an increase in the monthly state allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000.

The governor made this announcement during the second day of the state delivery meeting on Friday, July 4, at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo.

He explained that the increment was to support the federal government’s ₦77,000 monthly allowance, helping corps members meet their basic needs.

“Over 10,000 corps members are posted to Akwa Ibom annually. We must continue to encourage and support them,” Eno said.

The development followed his recent approval for the reconstruction of the NYSC orientation camp at Ikot Itie Idung in Nsit Atai, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of corps members in the state.
