Nigerian university commences strike over unpaid salaries

Academic activities at one of Nigeria’s federal universities, University of Jos, have been disrupted as the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced a strike action following the failure of the government to pay lecturers their June 2025 salaries.

The decision to down tools was communicated to members late Thursday night by the branch chairman, Professor Jurbe Molwus.

In the notice circulated to union members, Molwus stated, “This is to request all members to abstain from lectures and statutory meetings if our salary for the month of June 2025 is not paid by 11:59 pm today, 3rd July 2025.”

He added that the move was consistent with both a national resolution and a prior agreement reached at the local level.

“This is in line with the extant NEC resolution that branches should take action when salary is not paid by the third day of a new month and our congress resolution of 4th June 2025 affirming this position,” the message continued.

The strike officially began at the stroke of midnight on Friday, July 4, 2025.

“The action takes effect from 12:01 am on Friday, 4th July 2025. Please ensure full compliance until you are communicated to resume work,” Molwus instructed, noting that a monitoring team has been set up to ensure compliance.

“The strike monitoring team of the branch will be activated to monitor compliance,” he concluded.
