6 arrested over killing of man who reportedly stole yams in Abuja market

Authorities in the Federal Capital Territory have apprehended six individuals linked to the fatal mob attack of a man accused of stealing yams at Gosa Market, located along the Airport Road in Abuja.

The tragic event sparked panic among local traders and residents, prompting a temporary closure of the bustling market, which is known for offering affordable foodstuffs in the capital city.

At a media briefing on Friday, FCT Commissioner of Police, Adewale Ajao, disclosed that law enforcement personnel responded swiftly to the scene to calm tensions and restore order in the area.

He explained that the violence was triggered after the man accused of theft was lynched by someone who decided to take matters into their own hands.

“A young man was accused of stealing some tubers of yam at the market. And lo and behold, an individual decided to take the law into his hands. That’s a complete human being. This is what led to the crisis,” Ajao said.

“Following the police swiftly moved into the area to douse tensions and restore normalcy.Six suspects are currently in custody over the matter, which the police are treating as a clear case of murder.”

The Commissioner noted that police immediately engaged with local leaders and traditional authorities to de-escalate the situation and prevent further unrest.

“Immediately after the incident, we engaged the community leader there. The traditional ruler was with us. We discussed and tried to find out what went wrong. They saw the need to embrace peace,” he added.

Ajao also confirmed that Gosa Market had reopened under tight security, with officers deployed to maintain peace and ensure the safety of traders and customers.

“The market is on today, and life is bubbling there. Our policemen are on ground, policing the marketing operation,” he stated.
