Football fans around the world are in mourning following reports that Portuguese international and Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, has tragically died in a car accident in Spain.

The 28-year-old was reportedly involved in a fatal crash on the A-52 highway in the Zamora province of the Castilla and León region.

According to sources from the Portuguese media, Jota was travelling with his younger brother, André, who is also a professional footballer, when the accident occurred. The incident is said to have taken place at kilometre 65 of the A-52 in Cernadilla, a location known for its winding roads and limited visibility.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the crash but, sadly, confirmed that Jota succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

“The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire,” the emergency services stated.

They added that the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) were immediately notified of the incident.

Details about the circumstances leading to the accident and the condition of Jota’s brother André remain unclear as of now.

Diogo Jota, who made his mark as a forward for Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, was widely admired for his skill, pace, and work ethic on the pitch.

His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes already pouring in from clubs, teammates, and fans globally.
