Wike Fubara Amaewhule make public appearance in Rivers after peace deal

Just days after a renewed peace effort led by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, three major figures at the heart of Rivers State’s prolonged political crisis, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and suspended Speaker of the State House of Assembly Martin Amaewhule — were seen together at a public event.

The occasion was a funeral service held in Rumueprikom, the hometown of Wike, located in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Their joint appearance marks a significant development in a political rift that has gripped the state for nearly two years.

The gathering follows Thursday’s peace meeting in Abuja, where President Tinubu intervened in an effort to reconcile Fubara and his estranged allies.

A number of prominent politicians were also present at the event, including Senators Allwell Onyesoh, George Thompson Sekibo, and Olaka Nwogu.

Others in attendance were former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche; ex-lawmaker Hon. Ken Chikere; APC South-South Vice Chairman Victor Giadom; and Dr. Sam Sam Jaja, former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP.

While the event remained apolitical, the symbolic gathering of the key actors in the Rivers political crisis has raised fresh hopes that a resolution may be in sight.

The situation had escalated to the point where a state of emergency was declared in the state three months earlier.
