BREAKING: Fubara meets with Rivers Assembly’s members, set to seal peace deal

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has initiated a reconciliation process by meeting with the suspended Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, along with other disgruntled lawmakers.
The meeting, which sources confirmed took place in Abuja on Thursday evening, marked the first significant peace effort between Fubara and the embattled legislators.
According to accounts from those familiar with the development, the interaction ended on a warm note, with Fubara and Amaewhule seen sharing laughter and clasping hands.
“It was a fruitful engagement,” said a source who spoke under condition of anonymity. “The suspended Governor is determined to make peace. He has started the real engagement.”
Insiders disclosed that the Abuja session is only the beginning of broader peace efforts, with a larger meeting expected to follow where detailed reconciliation terms will be discussed.
Governor Fubara was suspended from office on March 19 following a state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu. The National Assembly ratified the decision in response to rising political unrest in Rivers State.
To stabilize the situation, President Tinubu appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, as interim administrator for an initial six-month period—aimed at allowing the key political actors time to resolve their differences.
While Fubara has previously met with President Tinubu and his estranged political mentor, Nyesom Wike, Thursday’s dialogue with the lawmakers has been described as the most concrete step yet toward a lasting resolution.
Wike has repeatedly stressed that true reconciliation could only begin once the governor reconciles with key stakeholders, particularly members of the State Assembly, whose salaries and allowances were reportedly withheld for over two years.
Reactions to the meeting were largely positive within Rivers political circles. Supporters of Fubara, including members of his “Simplified Movement,” applauded the move as a long-awaited and commendable step.
