2 lawmakers dump PDP, Labour Party for APC

In a fresh wave of political realignment, two members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, June 24, officially resigned from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), declaring their defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers announced their decision in separate letters read during plenary by the Speaker of the House.

Peter Akpanke who represents Obanliku/Obudu/ Bekwara federal constituency of Cross River State dumped the PDP while Paul Nnamchi who represents Enugu East/Isi Uzo federal constituency of Enugu left the Labour Party.

Both lawmakers left their parties to join the ruling APC.

In a letter of defection addressed to the leadership of the Green Chambers, Akpanke said he dumped the PDP over the prolonged crisis rocking the party.

He also said that the crisis within the party has defied all forms of solutions.

In addition, Nnamchi said he left the Labour Party following the leadership crisis that has continued to destabilise the party’s activities.

The letters were read on the floor of the plenary by Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The lawmakers further commended the previous parties for the opportunities handed to them throughout the time they had to fly the parties’ flag.

Akpanke, in addition, said the absence of peace in his former party prompted his decision to join the APC.
