U S warns citizens to steer clear of govt military areas in Abuja

The United States government has issued a new security advisory, cautioning its citizens to avoid unnecessary visits to military and government facilities across Nigeria, with a particular focus on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

In a statement released on Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja cited growing global security concerns as the reason behind the alert. As part of the advisory, movement restrictions have been placed on all embassy personnel and their families, effectively banning them from visiting military sites and government venues for non-official purposes.

The embassy urged U.S. citizens in Nigeria to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings, and stay updated through official channels.

The Embassy explained that recent unspecified global developments have triggered reinforced security measures and a reassessment of movement around sensitive areas.

American nationals living in or visiting Nigeria have been advised to remain extra vigilant in public spaces, especially in areas popular among Westerners, expatriates, and government personnel.

The statement partly read, “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time.”

In its advisory, the US government also urged its citizens to avoid large gatherings, reconsider unnecessary travels, vary their daily routines, and familiarize themselves with emergency exits in public buildings.

It further advised individuals to review their personal security arrangements and stay informed through official embassy channels.

Despite the security warning, the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos confirmed they remain open to provide consular services.

American citizens in Nigeria were also encouraged to monitor the embassy’s official website for updates and security notices.
