US gov declares June 14 as Igbo Day

The Governor of North Carolina, United States,  Josh Stein,  has designated June 14, 2025, as “Igbo Day” in a formal proclamation celebrating the cultural and societal contributions of the Igbo community within the state.

The official statement, signed by Governor Stein, acknowledges the Igbo people as a vital part of North Carolina’s diverse social, cultural, and economic fabric.

According to the proclamation, members of the Igbo community have made notable strides in various sectors, including education, law, healthcare, technology, entrepreneurship, and the arts. Beyond professional accomplishments, the community has also demonstrated strong civic engagement through volunteer work, such as supporting local schools, organizing food drives, cleaning highways, and aiding women’s shelters and hospitals.

The governor also praised the community’s role in preserving and sharing their heritage, citing participation in local cultural festivals and performances.

Of particular note was the formation of the nonprofit Igbo Day Festival Organisation in 2022, which hosted the inaugural Igbo Day Festival on July 10 of that year. The festival aims to educate the broader public on Igbo culture through music, language, art, and traditional values, while instilling a sense of pride among younger generations.

Governor Stein commended the Igbo community for its efforts to maintain its cultural legacy and inspire future generations to embrace their identity.

“Now, therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as ‘Igbo Day’ in North Carolina and commend its observance to all citizens,” the proclamation reads.
