As part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on several distinguished Nigerians in recognition of their outstanding contributions to democracy, human rights, literature, and national development.

The honours were officially announced during a joint session of the National Assembly held on Wednesday, June 12, marking yet another milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward democratic consolidation.

Among the most notable recipients was the late Kudirat Abiola, who was posthumously awarded the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR). Kudirat, a fearless pro-democracy activist and wife of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, played a pivotal role in the struggle for the restoration of democracy following the annulment of the 1993 presidential election—an election widely believed to have been won by her husband.

Others honoured include:

• Bola Ige (CFR) – former Attorney General of the Federation and a vocal advocate for democracy.

• Pa Reuben Fasoranti (CFR) – elder statesman and Afenifere leader.

• Nurudeen Olowokere (CON) – honoured for his contributions to the democratic process.

• Prof. Wole Soyinka (GCON) – Nobel Laureate and literary icon, recognized for his lifelong advocacy for justice and human rights.

• Prof. Olatunji Dare (GCON) – celebrated columnist, academic, and public intellectual.

• Bayo Onanuga (CON) – veteran journalist and presidential aide, recognized for his role in pro-democracy journalism.

• Senator Shehu Sani (CON) – former senator and rights activist, awarded for his work in civil society and advocacy.

• Femi Falana (CON) – renowned human rights lawyer and constitutional advocate.

Speaking at the event, President Tinubu said the awards reflect Nigeria’s appreciation for individuals who have stood firmly for truth, justice, and the democratic ideal—even in the face of adversity.

“These men and women have paid the price, used their voice, pen, and courage to shape the democratic space we now enjoy,” the president said.
