Tragedy as explosion kills 6 in Sokoto

At least six people lost their lives on Sunday in Gwabro village, located in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, following a devastating explosion suspected to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED).
Spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmad Rufai, confirmed the tragic incident and the casualty figure during a statement to PUNCH Online. However, he withheld comments regarding the identity of those behind the deadly blast, citing an ongoing investigation.
Local residents were left shaken by the explosion, which reportedly tore through a section of the village. Among the eyewitnesses was Garzali Raka, Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Chairman of Tangaza LGA, who confirmed that all six victims have been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Local sources alleged that the explosion may have been orchestrated by members of the notorious Lakurawa terrorist group, said to have been operating across Tangaza and neighbouring Gudu Local Government Area.
“The Lakurawa terrorists are mostly foreigners and have continued to disturb the peace in several villages across both councils,” one resident claimed.
The incident has heightened fear in the affected communities, with residents calling on federal and state authorities to urgently address the worsening security situation and restore peace to the region.
