Minister Atta launches empowerment programme for former Kano councillors

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Atta, has inaugurated a special empowerment initiative aimed at supporting former local government councillors and special assistants in Kano State.
The event, which took place at the Federal Secretariat on Katsina Road in Kano, brought together past Supervising Councillors, Councillors, and ex-Special Assistants who served across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas from 2014 to date.
According to a statement issued Monday by the Minister’s aide, Seyi Olorunsola, the initiative was launched in the spirit of the Eid El Kabir celebration to recognise the contributions of grassroots leaders, many of whom continue to play vital roles in their communities despite no longer holding public office.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Chief of Staff Salisu Gwangwazo emphasized the enduring value of service at the local level.
“Service to the people,” he said, “is service to God. The story of Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah reminds us of the blessings that come with sacrifice and selflessness. I see a reflection of that sacrifice in the lives of those who served our communities at the grassroots with sincerity, often with little recognition or reward.”
Gwangwazo stressed the burden often borne by local government officials, who serve closest to the people, yet are frequently overlooked once out of office.
“Sadly,” he remarked, “many of them are often forgotten after leaving office. But today, we make a strong statement—that service will not go unnoticed. That there is dignity in public service. That those who serve faithfully at the local level may yet be called upon to serve at higher levels.”
Also addressing the gathering, former Chairman of Fagge Local Government Council, Ibrahim Fagge, who also represented Minister Atta at the event, urged beneficiaries to remain active in their communities.
“Leadership is a calling,” he said, “and while you may currently be out of office, your commitment to the people must never waver. I believe many among you still have much to offer, and in due course, some will return to public service, possibly in even greater capacities.”
The programme was attended by key political figures, including Hon. Seyi Olorunsola, Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy Senate President, alongside senior party members and community leaders. Their attendance, organisers said, reflects the inclusive and bipartisan spirit of the initiative.
