Senior naval officer stabbed to death in Kaduna

A senior naval officer, Lieutenant Commodore M. Buba, has died after being stabbed by a suspected robber during a violent confrontation at Kawo Bridge in Kaduna.

The tragic incident occurred while the officer, who was undergoing training at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, was returning to the institution and had stopped to fix a flat tyre.

According to eyewitnesses, the attacker approached Buba and demanded his mobile phone and other valuables. The officer reportedly refused, questioning the demand, which led to the suspect stabbing him in the chest with a locally made knife.

“He alighted from his car trying to change the flat tyre, when the unknown assailant suddenly appeared and demanded him to hand over his GSM phone. The senior officer refused questioning the rationale when the assailant suddenly stabbed him on the chest with a local knife,” a witness recounted.

Suleiman Dahiru, a member of a local vigilante group who witnessed the scene, tried to intervene but was also injured by the attacker.

The situation quickly escalated as bystanders rushed to the scene. The suspect was overpowered and lynched on the spot.

A senior military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that, “The wounded senior officer was initially rushed to Manaal Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival. The corpse of the deceased was subsequently evacuated to 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna mortuary for further action.”

He added that efforts were underway to enhance security in the area: “Troops in plain clothes, police and other civil security agencies have been mobilised and tasked on covert operations to identify and clear all miscreants loitering around bus stops and other black spots in Kaduna Metropolis.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, also confirmed the incident and described it as “unfortunate.” He assured the public that police are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of residents in Kaduna and across the state.
