FCT : 27-year-old man falls into abandoned mining pit, dies

Tragedy struck in Pangu Village, located in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, as a 27-year-old man, Ismail Ahmed, lost his life after being trapped in an abandoned mining pit.
The incident occurred on Saturday, June 7, during a torrential downpour. According to reports obtained by Zagazola Makama, Ahmed had been washing clothes near a stream when the rain intensified. In an attempt to find shelter, he entered a disused pit left behind by former gold mining activities.
Family members said the walls of the pit collapsed due to the rain-soaked ground, burying him under debris.
Local residents quickly mounted a rescue operation and pulled Ahmed from the rubble. He was rushed to the Kwali General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The family chose not to conduct an autopsy, opting instead for burial in accordance with Islamic traditions.
Authorities and community leaders are urging residents to avoid derelict and potentially dangerous sites, especially during the rainy season, to avert future tragedies.
