3 suspected cult members arrested with firearms

Officers of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three individuals suspected to be members of a cult group, reportedly found with a firearm and live ammunition in the Owode-Ikorodu area.
The arrest was confirmed on Sunday in a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who noted that the suspects were tracked following intelligence received by the police.
“The apprehension and recovery followed a credible tip-off, which led to a well-coordinated, intelligence-led operation along the Owode-Ikorodu axis by one of the command’s tactical teams.
“During the operation, the suspects were found in possession of a locally made pistol and six live cartridges,” he said.
Preliminary findings, according to the police, indicate that the arrested men are linked to a cult group notorious for its involvement in violent criminal activities.
Hundeyin also disclosed that the trio allegedly played significant roles in the circulation and transportation of illegal arms within the state — a situation he said poses a serious risk to public safety.
“Further investigation showed that the suspects played key roles in facilitating the movement and distribution of illegal firearms across various parts of the state, posing a serious threat to public safety.”
Efforts are reportedly underway to locate and arrest additional members of the group.
The suspects will be prosecuted upon completion of the ongoing investigation, in line with legal procedures, according to the police.
Hundeyin added that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, has reiterated the command’s uncompromising stance against cultism and other forms of criminality.
He also encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and to share useful information with law enforcement agencies.
“The command remains committed to maintaining peace across the state,” he said.
