The Nigerian community in South Africa has demanded swift justice after two of its nationals, Taiwo Raji and Yemi Akinwunmi, were shot to death on April 20, 2025, outside their shops along Church Street in Arcadia, Pretoria.

According to the Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), the assailant, identified as a South African national, allegedly carried out the attack against the two Yoruba men in broad daylight. Weeks later, the suspect was granted bail, prompting outrage and deep concern among Nigerians living in the country.

NICASA President Frank Onyekwelu condemned the decision in a statement, warning that the suspect may attempt to flee.

“The suspected killer has long received bail from police custody and may not be found again,” Onyekwelu stated. “The deceased persons left behind two South African wives and six children, among other relatives and family members.”

A relative of one of the victims, Babatunde Dosumu, described the accused as a fellow trader who allegedly acted out of anger over a missing mobile phone.

“The police told us the man who killed my cousin was Kosina Titanbo. He claimed his phone was stolen at the market, and due to racial prejudice against Nigerians, he pulled a gun and shot them,” Dosumu said.

In a separate incident, Onyekwelu also revealed that another Nigerian, businessman Silas Ani, was abducted from his residence in Springs, Johannesburg, on April 24, 2025.

The suspect reportedly kidnapped Ani along with several others.
“Many of the victims were beaten, abused, and flogged while lying on bare floors,” Onyekwelu said. “Some were taken to isolated locations for further torture, including Mr. Silas Ani. While some victims were eventually released with severe injuries, Mr. Ani has yet to return.”

NICASA has enlisted a legal team—Tony Okorie Attorneys—to pursue justice at the Johannesburg High Court. Onyekwelu confirmed the case has been postponed for review by a senior judge as Ani remains missing.

He urged Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in South Africa to intensify efforts on both cases, noting that both the High Commission and consulate had been formally briefed.
