Many abducted, one killed in attack along Benue highway

A group of armed men suspected to be herdsmen launched an attack on commuters travelling along the Oweto-Apa-Adoka-Otukpo road in Benue State on Friday evening.
The incident reportedly took place between the Asaba and Olojo axis of the highway. Eyewitness accounts suggest that multiple individuals were abducted, including truck drivers and other travelers heading in both directions along the route. At least one fatality was recorded during the ambush.
Among the victims was a commercial motorcyclist, known locally as an Okada rider, who was reportedly transporting a casket to Agatu when he was shot and killed. His motorcycle and the casket were left at the scene, alongside several abandoned trucks.
John Ikwulono, a former chairman of Apa Local Government Area, confirmed the attack.
“Aside from the guy who was killed by the roadside, we don’t know how many casualties at the moment. Gunshots were sporadic; I believe that was done to get down those who may be trying to escape,” he said.
As of the time of reporting, efforts to contact the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful as calls to her phone went unanswered.
