The Kano State Government has pledged financial support of N1 million each to the families of over 20 young athletes who died in a devastating road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

This announcement was made on Saturday by the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, during a condolence visit to Nasarawa Hospital in Kano, where the bodies of the victims were taken.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Yusuf, Gwarzo described the tragedy as “a heartbreaking loss” that affects not only Kano State but the entire nation.

“It is a very sad day for us in Kano and for the entire country. These young men were returning from a national assignment, having represented Kano with distinction. Some were even returning with gold medals. Tragically, their journey was cut short just a few kilometers from home.”

Officials confirmed that the deceased were part of the Kano contingent at the national sports festival—a nationwide event designed to promote peace, unity, and youth development through athletics.

In addition to the monetary aid, Gwarzo revealed that the state government will distribute food and other relief materials to support the bereaved families during this difficult time.

“We have already identified 20 of the victims here, while two others have been taken home by their families. The Governor has directed that the state government stand fully with the bereaved families and ensure that those injured receive the best medical attention,” he added.

The Deputy Governor also visited Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where seven injured athletes are currently receiving treatment. He expressed sympathy for the survivors and assured them of the government’s dedication to their full recovery.

Yusuf, through his deputy, ordered the immediate disbursement of funds to assist both the families of the deceased and the injured, stressing the importance of a compassionate and organized response.

“On behalf of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the people of Kano State, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. May Allah forgive their shortcomings and grant them Jannatul Firdaus,” Gwarzo prayed.
