Biafra Umuahia streets deserted as residents heed sit at home directive

Umuahia, the Abia State capital, came to a standstill on Friday as residents observed a sit-at-home order issued to mark Biafra Day, in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the Biafran War.

The usually lively city was unusually quiet, with major roads, markets, and parks completely deserted. Shops remained shut, and commercial activities were brought to a halt in compliance with the directive by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Banks were closed as well, leaving customers to rely on the cash they had on hand. Both private and public schools did not open, and there was little sign of the usual weekday activity.

In some neighbourhoods, youths were seen playing football on the empty roads, while a few residents gathered outside their homes, engaged in conversations about recent national developments.

As of the time of this report, there were no recorded confrontations between IPOB members and security operatives. Security personnel were also notably absent from the streets.
