Senate approves N124 2bn for upgrade of police stations officers training others

The Nigerian Senate has sanctioned a total of N124.2 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) as part of its 2025 spending plan.

This approval came after the adoption of a report presented by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs during the plenary session held on Wednesday.

Yunus Akintunde, the committee’s vice-chair and senator representing Oyo Central, explained that the proposal was thoroughly examined and endorsed without changes.

According to Akintunde, N1.2 billion of the budget is earmarked for personnel expenses, while a significant N98.6 billion will be directed toward capital projects designed to enhance the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) efficiency.

He stated that the funding will support officer training across the country, the refurbishment and construction of police stations, and upgrades to barracks and healthcare facilities.

The budget also includes provisions for acquiring compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, which Akintunde said would improve the force’s mobility and reduce fuel expenditures.

Akintunde emphasized the need for timely execution of the plan, especially in light of Nigeria’s persistent security issues.

In his contribution, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the funding as a strategic move to bolster national security.

“This budget is not just numbers on paper; it is a crucial investment in the safety and well-being of every Nigerian,” he said.

“The committee must ensure proper oversight so that every kobo appropriated is used effectively for the benefit of the police and the Nigerian people.”

The NPTF was established to create a sustainable financial mechanism for the police force’s training, welfare, and operational demands.
