Fire guts 3 storey building at Kano market

A major fire outbreak rocked the Sabon Gari area of Kano State on Tuesday, bringing down a three-storey building and destroying about 20 shops in the process.

The inferno, which began around 11:40 a.m., caused significant panic and damage within the bustling market.

While the full extent of the property loss is yet to be determined, market officials say no lives were lost, and the affected shops were unoccupied at the time of the incident.

According to reports, Ado Haruna Muhammad, the market’s spokesperson, was the first to alert the Kano State Fire Service. Emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene and managed to contain the fire before it could spread to other parts of the market.

Speaking to journalists after the flames were extinguished, Alhaji Abdul Bashir Hussien, a senior official in the market, confirmed the destruction of the shops and commended the quick intervention of the fire service and security forces, including Divisional Police Officer Muhammad Abubakar and his team, who stayed on-site throughout the firefighting efforts.

Hussien, however, expressed frustration over what he described as the carelessness of some traders, accusing them of negligence and unsafe practices that contribute to the recurring risk of fire outbreaks.

While the market begins to count its losses, Hussien thanked Allah for preventing a larger catastrophe and urged all traders to adopt more responsible habits to avoid future incidents.
