The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day, a significant U.S. federal holiday dedicated to honoring military personnel who died while serving in the armed forces.

The announcement was made via the U.S. Mission in Nigeria’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, where the mission emphasized the solemnity of the occasion and its importance in American history.

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, is marked by ceremonies across the U.S., including flag-laying events, parades, and moments of silence to reflect on the sacrifices made by members of the armed services.

All routine consular services at both the embassy and consulate will be suspended for the day. Normal operations are expected to resume on Tuesday, May 27.

The U.S. Mission advised anyone with urgent consular needs to visit its official website for emergency contact information.
