Tension gripped residents of Ibadan on Friday evening after unidentified gunmen attacked police officers on duty at the Sango junction, injuring a female officer and making away with a riot gun.

According to eyewitness reports, the officers from the Sango Division were stationed at their usual pin-down point around 8:00 p.m. when six armed assailants, riding on two motorcycles, launched a surprise attack. The attackers opened fire on the officers, causing panic in the area.

Inspector Rose Sunday, a traffic officer attached to the division, was hit in the chest by pellets while directing traffic during the assault. She was swiftly taken to Hamdala Hospital in Agbowo, where doctors successfully removed 12 pellets from her body. She is currently in stable condition and responding well to treatment.

Amid the chaos, a riot gun issued to Inspector Omoregbe James was snatched by the gunmen, who fled the scene on motorbikes.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators and are working to recover the stolen firearm.
