Waec Candidate

A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday morning in Ibadan as a West African Examinations Council (WAEC) candidate was fatally struck by a stray bullet fired by a police officer during a high-speed chase.

The heartbreaking event occurred along the Gbagi Market Road, plunging the city into mourning and outrage.

According to eyewitnesses, the officer was pursuing a vehicle suspected to be occupied by internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo Boys.” During the pursuit, the officer opened fire. Tragically, one of the bullets missed its target and hit a teenage student riding on a motorcycle with his twin brother.

The student was reportedly on his way to sit for his WAEC exam when he was shot. He was immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In the aftermath of the shooting, enraged market traders and grieving sympathizers marched to the Oyo State Secretariat, carrying the boy’s body in protest. The demonstration quickly gathered momentum, with protesters demanding justice and an overhaul of reckless police practices that continue to cost innocent lives.

Security personnel have since been deployed to the Secretariat entrance to manage the growing crowd. As of the time of this report, neither the Oyo State Police Command nor the state government has released an official statement on the incident.
