Insecurity: Nigerian gov declares Monday fasting, special prayer day

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has called on residents to observe a voluntary day of fasting and prayer on Monday, aimed at seeking divine intervention for peace and security across the state.
The governor made the announcement during a statewide broadcast on Saturday in Maiduguri. He described the initiative as a spiritual appeal for unity, healing, and resilience in the face of ongoing security challenges.
“In light of the current situation, I urge every citizen to join me in a collective act of faith. Through fasting and prayer, we can renew our strength and express our shared hope for peace across Borno, the Northeast, and the country at large,” Zulum said.
The governor noted that collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies has improved, adding that coordinated strategies are being implemented to address insecurity. These include bolstering intelligence gathering, enhancing early warning systems, and supporting volunteer forces like the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), hunters, and vigilante groups.
He warned against any form of collaboration with insurgent groups, stressing that such actions would be treated as threats to public safety.
Addressing the issue of water scarcity in parts of Maiduguri and Jere, Zulum acknowledged that last year’s flood damage to key infrastructure was responsible. He assured residents that efforts to restore water supply are ongoing and nearing completion.
On the recent surge in criminal activities within the metropolis, the governor announced the reactivation of the Anti-Social Vices Committee, which will work to combat all forms of violent crime.
Zulum concluded by extending his condolences to the Nigerian Armed Forces following recent losses in the line of duty and prayed for comfort for the bereaved families.
