Sokoto gov vows major crackdown on alcohol drugs

The Sokoto State Government has reiterated its firm stance against the sale and use of alcoholic beverages and other intoxicating substances, as part of ongoing efforts to promote public decency and moral conduct in the state.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu made this known on Friday at the inauguration of the newly renovated Shagari Jumu’at Mosque.

Highlighting recent activities by the state’s Hisbah Board, Aliyu pointed to the confiscation and destruction of large volumes of alcohol as proof of the administration’s dedication to its moral agenda.

“I commend the Hisbah Board for its relentless efforts in sanitising our society and eradicating social vices,” Aliyu said.

He added that while the Hisbah Corps would maintain its enforcement role, its officers must always operate lawfully and respect citizens’ rights.

The governor appealed to the public to support the Hisbah Board in fulfilling its duties effectively and responsibly.

Speaking on religious infrastructure, Aliyu disclosed that reconstruction is ongoing at 63 Jumu’at Mosques across Sokoto State.
He also announced the provision of monthly stipends for Imams, Deputy Imams, and Muazzins, as well as routine funding for mosque maintenance.

He urged those in charge of the Shagari mosque to ensure its cleanliness and preserve its purpose.

“Our administration is focused on executing impactful projects that directly benefit the lives of our people,” the Governor added.

Former Deputy Governor, Mukhtar Shagari, who commissioned the mosque, lauded the government’s development strides, particularly the renovation of the historic mosque in Shagari town—the birthplace of renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Abubakar Gumi.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Junaid described the mosque’s reconstruction as a commendable initiative that nurtures both spiritual life and community unity.
