Nigerian striker, Awoniyi, rushed to hospital for emergency surgery

Taiwo Awoniyi, striker for Nottingham Forest and Nigerian international, was taken to the hospital on Monday for urgent abdominal surgery following an injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City at the City Ground.
The incident occurred when Awoniyi collided with the goalpost while attempting — unsuccessfully — to finish a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga. Despite receiving several minutes of treatment on the pitch, he initially tried to continue playing.
It wasn’t until the following day that Forest’s medical team identified the severity of the injury, prompting immediate surgical intervention. Fortunately, the operation was not deemed life-threatening.
“The Club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” the club announced via a post on their official X account.“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate.”
The aftermath of the incident sparked controversy, as Forest’s owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly stormed onto the pitch after the final whistle to confront manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Marinakis was said to be displeased that Awoniyi remained on the field during stoppage time, even after the coach had consulted medical personnel.
Sunday’s result was a setback for Forest, who are striving to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 1980-81 season. The draw saw them drop to seventh place, one point shy of the top five — the minimum needed for Champions League qualification. With only two matches remaining, against West Ham and Chelsea, their fate is no longer in their hands.
However, Forest are already guaranteed a spot in the UEFA Conference League, marking a return to European competition for the club for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
